The Proposal

When I first started dating Adrian, I had the pleasure of attending his high school prom.  The night was fairly uneventful, but what I do remember (other than Adrian being the most handsome guy attending) is him winning the award for “Most likely to be late for his own wedding". This stuck with me throughout the years.

After 5 years of us dating, we knew we were meant to be together. After 8 years,  I started to get a little frustrated with the lack of a very important question being asked!  Finally at 11 years , I knew that I had to take measures into my own hands.

I have always drummed to my own beat and I knew that I needed a proposal that would be different too. Before our 12th anniversary, I started writing my own lyrics with the intention of turning the proposal into a song.  At the same time, I was playing around with an internet trend known as the Cup Song. It’s a song that goes with a beat made from tapping and flipping a cup. I practiced this for a while and realized that this would be the perfect song to add my own verse to. I made a YouTube video of me playing the song so that I would have a taped copy (I most likely would have messed up if I had sung it live to Adrian).  It also allowed me to learn the song in front of him without having to sneak sing around.

At the same time, Ottawa was having our second Comicon (Comic/Geek Convention for those of my family that are more mainstream and less geek). There were two actors that were attending that Adrian and I enjoy. I

decided to get my picture taken with the two (Felica Day and Wil Wheaton). I brought signs for them (and myself) to hold that said WILL YOU MARRY ME? It was a highly stressful day with a few mishaps (like forgetting my Photo OP receipt at home). In the end, the photo was a huge success! Both Wil and Felicia were so nice and excited (Wil even asked if he could give ME a hug!).

I proposed to Adrian on our 12th anniversary with 2 sets of Calvin and Hobbes Cufflinks. When I made him sit in the living room he noticed the box and said “You’re not proposing to me are you?!” I immediately laughed it off saying “NO!”

Before we shared anniversary gifts, I mentioned that I had finally recorded the Cup Song on YouTube.  He watched the video and very quickly read between the lines. By the time we got to the newly added verse there was a tear in his eye and he couldn't say no. This of course was followed by the picture and cuff links.

In the end, I’m glad he left the proposing to me! I had more fun than I realized I would and it turned out pretty well , don’t you think?
